The 18th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (WCEE2024) officially opened today at the Allianz MiCo, Europe’s largest conference centre. The opening ceremony, held at 9:30 a.m. in the Gold Room, was attended by distinguished institutional figures, marking the start of an event of global scope. We are honored to have you, our esteemed participants from over 100 nations, as an integral part of this event.
The opening ceremony was attended by
– Farzad Naeim, Franco Braga and Rui Pinho, Conference Presidents (IAEE & ANIDIS) and Chairmen of the Organising Committee;
– Martina Riva, Councillor of the Municipality of Milan;
– Attilio Fontana, President of the Lombardy Region;
– Guido Castelli, Senator and Extraordinary Commissioner for Post Earthquake Reconstruction 2016;
– Fabrizio Curcio, Head of the Civil Protection Department;
– Ekhosuehi Iyahen, Secretary General of the Insurance Development Forum;
– Nello Musumeci, Minister for Civil Protection and Sea Policies.
The ceremony ended with a musical performance introduced by Michele Calvi and conducted by Eros Cristiani.
The Arquata del Tronto Reconstruction Project
During the morning, Minister Musumeci had the opportunity to visit the stand of the Pavia Earthquake Engineering Research Hub, which brings together excellent institutions such as our Foundation, the University of Pavia, IUSS and DICAr. Here, the Minister observed the 3D model reproducing the town of Arquata del Tronto and how it would be made safe. Explaining the project to Minister Musumeci, Guido Castelli, and Fabrizio Curcio was Eng. Gian Michele Calvi is one of the promoters of the reconstruction project with Eucentre Foundation.
Innovation and Knowledge
The first day of WCEE2024 began with Keynote speakers like Julian J. Bommer (Imperial College London), while for the CSI/IAEE Masters Series Lectures there’s Steve Kramer (University of Washington, USA). These talks offered insights into the latest earthquake-resistant construction innovations and techniques, exploring advanced topics from seismic risk assessment to emerging technologies for disaster mitigation.
