The Association for Seismic Isolation (ASSISi) has announced the winners of the inaugural 2024 Global Design & Innovation Awards, recognising groundbreaking advancements in seismic protective systems design and innovation worldwide. This year’s awards attracted 37 entries from 14 countries, demonstrating a global commitment to enhancing earthquake resilience through technological innovation.
An esteemed international jury evaluated the submissions, selecting seven exemplary projects for recognition, including a prestigious Grand Prize winner and six Category Award recipients. The projects showcase significant advancements in seismic isolation and energy dissipation technologies, blending architectural creativity with unparalleled seismic protection. Among the winners, special commendation was given to initiatives focusing on cost-effective solutions tailored to regional construction practices and materials, reinforcing accessibility and inclusivity in seismic safety.
Highlight on Non-Structural Excellence: Braceless Seismic Restraint
A notable awardee in the Non-Structural category was the Braceless Seismic Restraint for Suspended Nonstructural Elements, submitted by researchers from the University of Pavia (Bryan Chalarca), the University of Salento (Daniele Perrone), the University at Buffalo (André Filiatrault), the University School for Advanced Studies IUSS (Roberto Nascimbene), and the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering – Eucentre (Emanuele Brunesi).
This innovative system addresses the vulnerabilities of suspended nonstructural elements (SNSEs), such as piping, ducting, and lighting systems, which are critical yet highly susceptible to seismic demand.
The Braceless Seismic Restraint system eliminates traditional bracing elements, replacing them with a rotary friction damper. This technology enhances seismic performance by increasing energy dissipation capacity, reducing residual displacements, and minimizing damage to SNSEs and their restraints. Its design facilitates easier architectural integration and reduces installation complexity, proving efficient and sustainable.
Driving the Future of Seismic Innovation
ASSISi’s 2024 awards underscore the transformative potential of seismic protection technologies. By fostering innovation and recognizing excellence, the awards encourage advancements that protect infrastructure and save lives. The success of initiatives like the Braceless Seismic Restraint exemplifies how cutting-edge research can revolutionize traditional approaches, making seismic safety more effective and accessible.
Congratulations to all the winners for contributing to a safer, more resilient built environment.
