The 18th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (WCEE2024), held at the Milan Conference Centre (MiCo) in Citylife, ended on Friday, July 5th. Some 4200 researchers from 82 countries attended this event, confirming it as an important platform for exchange and innovation in earthquake engineering.
During the assembly, delegates from the 62 member countries of the World Earthquake Engineering Association (IAEE) unanimously elected their new president, Professor Gian Michele Calvi of the IUSS in Pavia, founder of our Foundation. This appointment represents significant recognition both on a personal level for Professor Calvi and the entire Italian scientific community involved in earthquake engineering.
Professor Calvi’s nomination is in addition to the prestigious Mallet-Milne Prize, recently awarded by the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED) for his outstanding contributions in seismic design methodologies, seismic assessment and adaptation, experimental methods and the development of pedagogy in earthquake engineering. His keynote lecture will be held on May 28th, 2025, at the Thomas Telford Theatre of the Institution of Civil Engineers in London.
At the end of the congress, a group of participants had the opportunity to visit the laboratories of the Eucentre Foundation. There, they witnessed a groundbreaking vibration tableing roof with simultaneous control of nine degrees of freedom of motion. This demonstration underscored the crucial role of the Fondazione experimental research in enhancing the seismic p test on the build protection of historic structures, reassuring us about the progress in earthquake engineering.
The next edition of WCEE will be held in 2028 in Montreal, Canada.
